Great Neck: Shouldering the Burden of Childhood

1996/98

3 minutes, 25 seconds

Great Neck takes place in Great Neck, Long Island. While Lijn was working on the bronze for the installation of this work, she found a 16mm reel of colour film taken by Heinz Jansen, a filmmaker friend of her father’s, in 1942, which she had never seen. There Lijn was playing with her mother, the apple of her eye, just before the birth of her brother whose appearance in their midst would change her life forever.

Early Events

Five digital film installations that place Lijn’s earliest memories within different parts of her body.

“Chaos is at first a broken line of being, and recovery occurs through re-experience of continuity.”
