Split Spiral Spin: Project for a Sculpture as an Interference System

1982

1159 x 610 cm base diameter.

Perforated stainless steel and zinc coated mild steel.

It was commissioned by Warrington Development Corporation for the Birchwood Science Park in 1982.

The sculpture is composed of 8 parabolic vanes, each curving around the preceding one in what appears on plan to be a spiral armed shape. The overlapping parabolic layers of perforated steel create large-scale interference patterns. When back-lit, the sculpture appears transparent, when front-lit, opaque.
