Every time I received a package of new pieces from JPL in Pasadena, I would anxiously open it, hoping to find a perfect whole cone, disc or cylinder of Aerogel and then be disappointed to see it cracked or sometimes even altogether shattered. I realised that I was looking for wholeness, a complete thing, but the Aerogel told me wholeness was not what this project was about. I began to think of fragmentation as one of the main threads of the project and the idea of ruins took hold of me.
