I was walking across the Place de la Bastille in the autumn of 1982 when the first words of a song came to me at such a pace that I hastened to look for a piece of paper and a pencil to scribble it down as I walked. In May I returned to Paris to give a performance at the Pompidou Centre of songs from Crossing Map. Although I was lured by the excitement of live performance, I was already thinking of making performing sculptures.
