After Liliane Lijn had completed the Woman of War and exhibited it with Lady of the Wild Things at the Venice Biennale, she began a series of oil pastel drawings called Inner Portraits. Lijn thought of these drawings as visualisations of her Self.

These drawings are midway between archetypal female images and a movement towards work in which Lijn looked directly at herself.
