Vivian Lynn / Liliane Lijn: A Synergy Spanning 1991 to 2021, an article by Laura Castagnini, published by online New Zealand magazine Contemporary HUM, 2021.

Writer and curator Laura Castagnini reflects on the three exhibitions as anchor points to trace the transcontinental history of the relationship between Aotearoa artist Vivian Lynn (1931–2018) and New York-born artist, Liliane Lijn. A simple mistake by art historian Lucy Lippard—a confusion brought on by the mirroring of the artists’ names—led to a two-person exhibition of Lynn and Lijn in Wellington in 1998, where the two artists met for the first time.

In 2021, the artists were brought together in the 13th Gwangju Biennale, with the directors of the exhibition identifying their shared feminist approaches and aesthetic, while Lijn was instrumental in instigating Lynn’s first London exhibition at Southard Reid. Laura Castagnini  speaks to Lijn about the shared history and interactions between the artists, and the uncanny similarities that arise in their work and ideas.
